Big reward to solve 'brutal and horrendous' car bombing

Almost 30 years ago, John Furlan died instantly when the car he was driving exploded. 

The blast catapulted his vehicle 15 metres down the road, shattering nearby shop windows and spraying debris across more than 300 metres.

Police still don't know who killed him. 

The 48-year-old businessman was alone and driving his usual route from his Coburg home to his car wrecking business on Sages Road in Melbourne's north on August 3, slot gacor maxwin 1998.

Just after 8.30am, while still in motion, a bomb in his car detonated.

Police said commercial explosives had been attached to the car while Mr Furlan was visiting a friend in Hobart days before.

On Monday, police announced a $1 million reward in a bid to find those responsible for Mr Furlan's death. 

Detective Inspector Chris Murray said police believed members of the public could hold the missing piece of the puzzle.

"It has been almost 30 years since John's death, but I would like to strongly reinforce that this is both an active investigation and one that we believe is solvable," Det Insp Murray said. 

"John's death was shocking, brutal and a horrendous act of violence that put the lives of many innocent civilians going about their daily life at risk.

"We have every reason to believe someone out there today knows what happened to John and who is responsible."

The reward is the most recent public plea to solve Mr Furlan's murder. 

In 2000, police offered a $100,000 reward for a caller, who gave them a valuable lead, to call back. 

During that call, police were told about two cars that were seen trailing Mr Furlan's white Subaru before it exploded. 

His death is believed to be linked to Melbourne's gangland war, which claimed the lives of 36 underworld figures as rival factions fought for control and influence. 

It began in January 1998 when Alphonse Gangitano was shot dead in his Templestowe home and ended when Carl Williams was killed at Barwon Prison in 2010. 

One notable suspect for Mr Furlan's killing was mafia-linked Domenico Italiano, who came under police's scrutiny before his own death in 2005.
