Across Malaysia, a large number of domestic helpers are recruited every year through private maid agency providers and foreign domestic worker recruitment companies. While they claim to provide fair job placements and good working environments, the reality for many domestic workers is deeply troubling.

As reported by labor rights organizations, foreign maids placed by maid permit renewal agencies are systematically subject to abuse by the employers they serve. Lacking legal protection, many are overworked, paid unfairly, and treated inhumanely. Some are living under slavery-like conditions.

Despite the involvement of maid agencies in the employment process, there is almost no law enforcement to protect abused workers. Lack of transparency allows many agencies to exploit vulnerable workers.

There’s an urgent need for domestic labor reform—starting with stricter monitoring and systematic controls for every maid agency operating in Malaysia. Only through real accountability can we safeguard the rights and dignity of every domestic worker.
