A mildew-infested mattress can be a a serious hygiene issue, especially since you rest for hours every night on it. Fungi grow rapidly in humid, warm conditions, and if moisture gets trapped in your mattress from spills, high humidity, or poor ventilation, it can spread across the fabric. The critical response in dealing with mildew is to address it immediately. The longer it’s left untreated, the harder it becomes to remove, and the more likely it is to spread or cause persistent smells and immune responses.

First, take off every sheet, pillowcase, and cover and wash them at high temperature with laundry soap. Ensure all items are fully air-dried or tumble-dried before remaking the bed. Next, vacuum the mattress surface thoroughly using a a handheld vacuum featuring a fabric brush to remove surface contaminants and mold residue. This won’t remove all the mildew but will significantly lower the concentration before deeper cleaning.

Create a natural AC cleaning service spray by combining one-to-one vinegar and distilled water. Its acidic composition makes it a potent, non-toxic killer of fungal growth. Spray sparingly to moisten, not flood, the affected spots. Let the solution sit for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Then, gently buff the region with a damp, lint-free sponge in small circles. Don’t apply excessive pressure, as this can compromise the material and drive contamination inward.

After wiping, cover the spot with a thin, uniform coating of baking soda. Baking soda helps absorb excess moisture and neutralize lingering odors. Let it sit for several hours or overnight. Then, vacuum it up completely with the same brush attachment you used earlier.

Stop future growth by ensuring constant airflow in your sleeping space. Run a moisture-reducing device if humidity rises past 50%. Elevate your mattress to allow air to flow underneath. Opt for a barrier pad that’s both waterproof and ventilated. And change your bed sheets regularly. Never allow spills to sit on the mattress—clean them up immediately with a dry towel and let the area air out.

If the mildew is extensive, has spread deep into the foam, or continues to return despite your efforts, it may be time to swap out the old unit. Never risk your well-being for the sake of cost savings. Regular maintenance and keeping things dry are the best defenses against mildew in the long run.
